MB: Last time Spot On were here they had serious sound issues, no such problem this time and I'm told it was almost too much in the first set. The second set was fine with a wide mix of covers but what on earth was the "My Generation" mash-up at the end? It started off ok'ish but developed into a bit of a thrashy mess transitioning into reggae then a bit of funk and finally some punk over tones, a pity, not nice guys, that needs a serious re-think.
Sunday 5th October 2014 : Emerald is a lively 4 piece pop/rock and ceilidh band led by an Irish female singer covering Pogues, Dubliners, Sawdoctors, Corrs, Lizzy, Van Morrison, U2, Waterboys, Proclaimers, Fratellis, Rod Stewart, Dire Straits & Beatles. Friday 5th September 2014 : Local band The Alex Smith Formula make a welcome return for an evening of original music.
MB: Lots of people in for yet another Smiths classic session, Jamie certainly hasn't lost any drumming skills. I have absolutely no idea what it was however my favourite track of the night was their last one, really punchy with lots of punk influence!

Saturday 9th August 2014 : Rewired are an interesting band performing unusual interpretations of various covers but also some excellent traditional and more familiar versions as the night goes on. Their Oasis covers are uncannily reminiscent of the band in its early days.
Saturday 2nd August 2014 : A magic pop, glam, rock trio playing four instruments, bass doubling up with keyboards, great harmonies with superbly crafted and well-executed medleys covering Queen, Beach Boys, Wings, Amy Winehouse, Take That, Robbie Williams, Sam Cooke and ELO.
Saturday 26th July 2014 : SECOND NATURE are a 4 piece band playing rock covers, mainly from the 70's / 80's. They began in 1996 playing a wide variety of pop covers. The band then began a more themed approach towards melodic classic rock putting their own stamp on covers by Pink Floyd, Gary Moore, The Eagles, Whitesnake and Rainbow (to name a few).
Sunday 20th July 2014 : I like to think of Mucho Mojo as a "project" not just a band, so many friends and musicians can be a part of this project, pro-tempore or as a stable member...Southern, Country, 70's Rock Band.
MB: If you missed this you really did miss a special three hoursworth of classic rock 'n' blues from this very talented 75% Italian band! Sounding superb through Balding Bloke's system bands covered were ZZ Top, Steppenwolf, Free, Black Crowes, a very funky Cream "Strange Brew", the deepest growled "Mustang Sally" one could ever hear and finishing the afternoon with "Purple Rain". Hopefully they'll return, don't miss them when they do.
Saturday 19th July 2014 : The STARVIN' SID phenomenon has been hovering about the local scene for about 17 years now which only has two rules - enjoy yourself and no politics. The material as ever is a combination of classic blues by such stars as Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and B. B. King, alongside contemporary tracks by people like Robin Trower, ZZ Top and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
MB: What can I write about these guys that's not already been written? Nothing other than somehow they seem to be getting even better than ever, absolutely superb blues rock.
Saturday 12th July 2014 : BlackHawk are the Isle of Wight's premier rock band with a line-up boasting some of the most experienced musicians on the south coast. BlackHawk breathe new life into classic rock from the sixties to the noughties and infuse it with their own inimitable take on modern standards.
MB: This was BlackHawk's third appearance and this time we got to hear them properly through Balding Bloke's system with two good sets of quality covers.
Friday 11th July 2014 : Cappuccino are a local 5 piece band performing rock, old and current pop, a little bit of blues, all of them classic tracks and in their own inimitable style...Expect to hear a completely new set of tunes not usually associated with them.
MB: Cappuccino seem to be really comfortable these days covering well-known songs that no one else seems to do getting great audience participation with many people singing along, dancing all up and down the bar & loads of Internet searching for who wrote what and when!
Thursday 10th July 2014 : 0.Degrees Festival 2014 on a Thurdays night at The Kings featuring Robots Found Errors, The Alex Smith Formula plus The Stallers, click here or the image to learn more...
MB: I din't get to see The Stallers therefore have no idea. It's been years since I last saw a Smith in action and it's been well-worth the wait ... when are you back? This was the first time I've seen Robots Found Errors, some of it I really didn't like but the funky stuff was really good leaving me wanting more. A rethink of their setlist would be a good idea.
Saturday 5th July 2014 : Lady Monsoon cover tracks by acts such as Plan B, Van Morrison, Muse, Destiny's Child, The Steve Miller Band, Fleetwood Mac, Janet Jackson, La Roux, The Police, Florence and The Machine, Adele, Bruno Mars, Jessie J, Shakespear's Sister, Skunk Anansie and loads more. We're sure you'll agree, there's something in there for everybody.
MB: Lots of current music especially enjoyed by the younger regulars and a fantastic "Proud Mary" to finish the night.
Louth Run For Life Sunday 29th June 2014 : The Fyreflies are a Lincoln based folk/rock duet performing original and lively material to suit a variety of tastes. Also perform 'folky' cover versions of well known songs by acts, such as: REM, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, The Stranglers, The Doors, Donovan and more. Although only formed in the beginning of 2012, The Fyreflies have enjoyed performing at festivals, for local radio and various charity events.
Saturday 28th June 2014 : Born out of a dream on the way to a stag do, four old school mates decide to form a band. Nine months later and KLOUT were born & feature covers of Simple Minds, The Jam, The Police, Green Day, Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, Blur, Oasis, Kings of Leon, Stone Roses & Razorlight.
Friday 27th June 2014 : The Tuesdays are a 4 piece rock and roll band keeping you moving all night to great fun music from the 60s onwards covering The Beatles, Buddy Holly, Elvis, The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, The Monkees, Herman's Hermits, The Eagles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Olly Murs, Train, Dave Clark Five, Oasis and Avicii.
MB: Fun band playing loads of covers, I counted 30+ in the second set alone, including many first timers at the Kings such as "Rock And Roll Music", "Bring It On Home To Me", "Real Wild Child", "Footloose", "Walk On The Wild Side", "Glad All Over", a couple of Beatles Medleys and the entire bar was up for their finale with Jerry Lee Lewis's "Great Balls Of Fire" ... all well-known and superb stuff.
Saturday 21st June 2014 : Crossfire is a four piece, self contained, classic/modern rock covers band that hail from the Grimsby area. Crossfire continue to entertain punters with their own blues rock style (not to mention Al's bright, exotic shirts).
MB: Excellent as always covering songs from the likes of The Cult, Jet, Lenny Kravitz, Kings Of Leon, Led Zeppelin and Golden Earring plus some new tracks we've never heard them play before.
Saturday 14th June 2014 : The Shard are a melodic Rock band formed in 2011 centred around Staus Quo type music but also T. Rex, Beatles, Faces, Rolling Stones, David Bowie and Free.
MB: Firstly the good news...a good selection of songs and seemingly good instrumentals. Secondly the bad news...supposedly there was a sound engineer, yes I saw him sat in front of the speakers but heavens knows what he was listening to since the sound was diabolical, the lead guitar over-powered everything and the main vocals were distorted because their system, quite simply, could not cope!
Saturday 7th June 2014 : Circa are predominantly a 4 piece from North East Lincolnshire consisting of two sets of brothers Mike & Matt, Drew & Dave. Other than a passion for music we all share an active interest in the Scooter scene. Circa are a quality covers band playing anything from 60s Mod to New Wave Punk, Indie to SKA plus their own material...
MB: After 20 years one of their last-ever gigs I'm led to believe and, as usual, a varied selection of songs and excellent sound from BB in the second set.
Thursday 6th June 2014 : Louth Bike Night features Witt-Less with all sorts of fun and music for a party night through until midnight. Just how many will be on stage is anyone's guess?
Saturday 31st May 2014 : From Boston The Strellies are a young Indie band...so I'm told!
MB: Unfortunately I only caught the last 45 mins but that was enough to appreciate their enthusiasm and talent covering many different songs including the huge 1953 hit "Hound Dog" from Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton. It would be good to hear them again especially playing through Balding Bloke's system.
Sunday 25th May 2014 : White Spirit are a Peterborough-based 4 piece classic rock band covering a large variety of hits from the 70's to the present day including AC/DC, Queen, The Cult, Led Zepplin, Thunder, Thin Lizzy, Guns & Roses, Sabbath, Velvet Revolver, UFO, Deep Purple, Foo Fighters, Cranberries, Alanis Morrisette & Bon Jovi.
MB: Excellent all-round band covering many songs not normally heard with great, strong vocals from Kirsty including "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" from The Darkness, Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" and their last song of the night Guns N' Roses "Sweet Child O' Mine".
Saturday 24th May 2014 : STARK are a 3 piece indie covers band who cover music from the 60's to the present chart listings and also dabble with original material from time to time. From the Beatles to the Killers and everything inbetween - but with a STARK twist.
Saturday Afternoon 24th May 2014 : Accomplished singer, acoustic guitarist covering the well-known and not so-well-known numbers from David Bowie, Oasis, Paul Weller and many others, a pleasure to listen to.
Friday 23rd May 2014 : Bo Weavil are a musical group from the North-West of England. Formed in 2011 and playing an evolving brew of folk, blues, country and bluegrass, we unashamedly play to the crowd with an entertaining mix of upbeat folk medleys, steady ballads and mournful blues, peppered all the way with plentiful three-part harmony singing and an emphasis on authoritative fiddle melodies.
MB: We have absolutely no idea what this band is like since at 8.00 pm tonight we learnt that they would not be turning up...Needless to say not to be recommended. This is the first time in SIX years we have failed to feature a band when one was billed!
Sunday 18th May 2014 : Enjoy relaxed afternoon of music, good company, booze and digging deep to support a fantastic Help for Heroes project that will raise money for those who have served their country and now need our support. Two bands confirmed so far WITT-LESS and Delusional Fools from 2.00pm.
Saturday 17th May 2014 : Playing hits from Oasis to Elton John, Guns 'N Roses to Take That. The members of Stolen Fridays all have very varied tastes from Rock to Blues to Folk to Pop it's all here!
Saturday 10th May 2014 : THE INFLUENTIAL FACTOR were formed in 2004 and are a popular band on the scooter rally scene playing 60's MOD, 79 REVIVAL, NEW WAVE PUNK & BRIT POP. Jam, Who, Paul Weller, Small Faces, Arctic Monkeys, Creation, Style Council, Ocean Colour Scene, Oasis, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, Secret Affair, Kinks, Ocean Colour Scene, Ordinary Boys. Loadsa energy!
MB: A warm night in The Kings for one of the region's best Mod bands from Hull. As usual a couple of faultless sets with everyone enjoying their broad selection of tracks to dance to. Back at the end of November!
Sunday 4th May 2014 : The Dukes, expect the very best of Texas "Roadhouse" rhythm and blues plus classic rock tracks from The Stones, Beatles, Cult, Wishbone Ash and many more.
MB: Ah, a side of The Dukes we've never heard before, mostly classic British rock. The first set had some awkward sound issues however they were quickly resolved and sets two and three were excellent featuring covers such as "Day Tripper", "Stuck In The Middle With You", "Pinball Wizzard", "Substitute", "Can't Get Enough", "Wishing Well", "Smoke On The Water" and "Alright Now".
Saturday 3rd May 2014 : The Soul Solution covering James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Duffy numbers as well as a wealth of other Soul and Motown classics. Powerful funk/soul band with a real edge and a great band for any function. Soul Solution are the sort of band that you just can't help but dance along to.
MB: It's always a pleasure to review this band, great tracks, great harmonies, great instrumentals and great sound engineering and thoroughly appreciated by all. Covers included "Superstition", "How Sweet It Is To be Loved By You", "Valerie", "Love Train", "Do You Love Me?", "Soul Man", a fabulous Ray Charles "What I'd Say", "I Feel Good", "Mustang Sally" and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag". Superb, can't wait to see them again.
Saturday 26th April 2014 : Spot On covering bands such as Arctic Monkeys, The Who, Green Day, The Levellers, Stevie Wonder, The Trammps, Cee Lo Green, Nirvana, The Verve, Killers, James, Paolo Nutini, Aloe Blacc, Oasis and more.
MB: The last time Spot On were here they played two good sets, what happened? Sad to say that outside of the mosh it was an inaudible mishmash of sounds dominated by thrashy drums and overly-used tinny cymbals. The three guitarists, and several times the vocals, could hardly be heard meaning that overall it was a sound engineering nightmare and very painful on the ears. They may be given another chance therefore they had better check out the availability of Balding Bloke.
Easter Sunday 20th April 2014 : Scrapyard Dogs from Scunthorpe, their set list includes songs from the following bands U2, Supergrass, Kasabien, Kings of Leon, Stereophonics, Travis, Snow Patrol, Razorlight, Green Day, The Killers, James, The Hoosiers, Jet, Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, The Fratellis, The Zutons, The Jam, Kaiser Chiefs, The Automatic, The Kooks, Blur, The Who and Keane.
MB: Scrapyard Dogs are unashamedly a 90s & 00s covers' band and they do it extremely well with both excellent vocals and instrumentals even though they were using a great drum machine, did you notice? Covers included "I Am The Resurrection", "Human", "Common People", "Park Life", "Don't Look Back In Anger", "Chelsea Dagger", "One Way Or Another", "Dakota", "I Predict A Riot", "Town Called Malice", "Mr Brightside", "Sex On Fire", "All These Things That I Have Done", "Sit Down" and "With Or Without You"...Just some of an excellent selection and thoroughly enjoyed by a full-on Kings choir!
Easter Saturday 19th April 2014 : The Sensational Soul Band create a great atmosphere with the sounds of Stax, Atlantic, Motown and many more great soul labels of the Sixties & Seventies.
MB: It was not until the last 4/5 tracks that the keyboard and vocals could be heard properly, until then poor sound engineering coupled with an over-powering bass guitar drowned-out most of the band's efforts with a generally good song selection despite a couple of totally non Soul/Motown tracks. Covers included "Knock On Wood", "Unchain My Heart", "My Girl", "Soul Man", "Everybody" and finishing with Wilson Pickett's "Land of 1000 Dances". By the way, the lights were extremely bright and annoying.
Good Friday 18th April 2014 : Trip To The Roses with Ali Barwood: Vox, percussion - Ben Williams: Rhythm Guitar, the odd backing vocal here and there - Dom Greenfield: Lead Guitar, Mandolin, Keyboards - A jam session is now a weekly event where many songs are written, beers are drunk and chili's are eaten...Enjoy!
MB: it's been 18 months since TTTR last played the Kings & 10 months since they last gigged, how would they fare? After a nervous start they got into their stride which included a great David Bowie "Heroes". Altogether their second set was even better with some excellent self-penned songs plus a much appreciated cover of Seal's "Crazy". During their interval local, singer, songwriter & very talented keyboard player Ian Timson entertained us and it was obvious that most liked him with their positive reaction.
Saturday 12th April 2014 : Emerald is a lively 4 piece pop/rock and ceilidh band led by an Irish female singer covering Pogues, Dubliners, Sawdoctors, Corrs, Lizzy, Van Morrison, U2, Waterboys, Proclaimers, Fratellis, Rod Stewart, Dire Straits & Beatles. We've been together for 11 years playing all over the UK.
MB: Here was an unexpected surprise when the billed band had to cancel at the last moment and Emerald stepped in. What can I write other than fabulous? Excellent instrumentals especially Jane's new keyboard, a mini telecaster plus an electric mandolin, well-rehearsed vocals and some lovely little Celtic twists to almost every song which included Van Morrison's "Brown-Eyed Girl", Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey In The Jar", a superb U2 "With Or Without You", Proclaimers "I Would Walk", a bar-stopping Carole King "You've Got A Friend", Dire Strait's "Walk Of Life" and to finish the night a great "Hippy Hippy Shake". The Kings' dancers were in, even the Kings choir struck up, they'll be back!
Saturday 5th April 2014 : My Generation play covers from all across the region like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene, The Jam, Stereophonics, The Police, Plus lots more check out our set list! We aim to be an affordable high quality covers band, with a very varied set.
MB: My Generation are becoming a regular fixture at The Kings and it's easy to hear why with excellent song choices, great instrumentals and vocals. The Beatles, Stones, Blur, Hendrix, several of the classics with obviously no need to ask what their final number was...The Who's "My Generation". No doubt they'll be back later in the year.
Saturday 29th March 2014 : The Local Heroes featuring covers of Dire Straits, The Coral, Queen, Snow Patrol, Eric Clapton, Primal Scream, The Beatles, The Arctic Monkeys, The Rolling Stones, Stereophonics, Fleetwood Mac, Steppenwolf, Hendrix, Fratellis, Green Day, Oasis & more.
MB: Relax, normal service has been resumed. Two superbly played sets commencing with Stevie Ray Vaughn's "The House Is Rockin'" & we knew we were in for a good night especially with the last song of the first set being a full-length "Sultans Of Swing"! The second set had a fabulously raw "All Day & All Of The Night" and "I Saw Her Standing There", the best "Sweet Home Alabama" I've heard in a long time, an amazing Joan Jett's "I Love Rock N Roll", and to finish the night a storming Van Halen "Jump". Excellently sound engineered by regular maestro Balding Bloke.
Saturday 22nd March 2014 : Emporium is a 5 piece rock band performing covers and original material.
MB: Instrumentally seemingly good however poor sound engineering meant that quite often the three guitarists' efforts could not be heard. The lead vocals were extremely disappointing on almost every song being off-key or flat with the backing vocals being likewise or even worse at times.
