The Wha? With Some Great First-Timers

I like new bands and especially those that set out to be completely different rather than play the “expected” classics from whichever genre. Scunthorpe evidently has a wealth of musical talent judging by the bands from that area who frequent The Kings and The Wha? were no less than advertised.

It was yet another cold, fairly quiet, Saturday night in mid-February until the band struck up, yep, initially they were loud however after a few minutes seemingly completely normal and congratulations to them on nailing their sound on their first visit with it travelling all the way down the bar and crystal clear. Even Balding Bloke was impressed on a night off.

You’ll find the two set lists below however I have one question, this is the third band in three weeks performing Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition”. Is something happening I’ve not been told of? Good version though:-)

First Set

1. It Takes Time - Otis Rush
2. Goin’ Down - Freddie King
3. Stop Messin’ Around - Fleetwood Mac
4. Red House - Jimi Hendrix
5. Messin’ With The Kid - Rory Gallagher
6. Too Tired - Gary Moore / Albert Collins
7. Got A Broken Heart - Walter Trout Band
8. Walkin’ By Myself - Gary Moore
9. Oh Well - Fleetwood Mac

Second Set

1. Cold Black Night - Gary Moore / Fleetwood Mac
2. Tore Down - Freddie King
3. Dust My Broom - Robert Johnson / Elmore James
4. All Your Love - John Mayall
5. Looking Back - John Mayall
6. The Hunter - Free
7. A New Day Yesterday - Jethro Tull
8. What’s Goin’ On - Taste (Rory Gallagher)
9. Superstition - Stevie Wonder
10. La Grange - ZZ Top

Now that where their set list ends however I am also sure we had:

11. Crossroads - Robert Johnson / Cream

Encores

1. I have absolutely no idea what either of these were, apart from excellent!
2.

Interestingly as the night progressed The Wha? were pulling in passers-by many of whom stayed and thoroughly enjoyed possibly their first taste of real music! All fabulous stuff, now all we need is some Solomon Burke, Bo Diddley, George Thorogood, John Lee Hooker, Lil Ed & The Blues Imperials and if anyone’s up for the challenge of J. B. Hutto’s “Lulubelle’s Here”, you’ll never get me out of The Kings:

You Tube - Lulubelle’s Here

Let’s get the diaries out guys, you’re going to be a very busy band.

    Hi Rich,
Big thankyou for the review….we had a good night hope you’ll have us back? We had some old blues ballads we were going to try but they seemed to like the more uptempo stuff….We aint been together long so just building up a set, hopefully by the time we play again will have some real stormers….just listened to the J.B Hutto number i love all that stuff….I’ve got a real passion for the ‘blues’ since listening to ‘The Alexis Korner’ blues hour on the radio back in the 70s…Just hope we stay true as so many bands sell out….I’m pluggin a few future no’s….stay tuned….once again a big thankyou from ‘THE WHA?’

Yep, the front of the bar do like their uptempo, dancey stuff on a Saturday night, the further you go down the bar the heavier and more serious the crowd are. Alexis Korner, wow, I just used to love listening to all his programmes and even saw his band live a few times. Have you ever heard any of Elvin Bishop, Aynsley Lister, Tommy Castro, Julian Sas, Michael Katon, Rob Tognoni, what about Leslie West and one of my favoruites for years, Ozzie band Vdelli, simply amazing, we’ve been trying to get him come to the UK on tour for ages however he seems to prefer staying in Germany, Switzerland and Austria!

Anyway, we’re always getting requests for extra blues gigs, you just wouldn’t believe who and how many from the USA recently, and we’re seriously looking at making more regular Friday nights a serious rock n blues night to separate them from pop/rock/mixture bands on Saturdays.

    We’ll keep you posted.
