Black Rose Rock, Boogie And Funk It Up!

February 26th, 2012 editor No comments

We haven’t see Black Rose since last Spring and more’s the pity since they produce an excellent sound, they’re vocally and instrumentally tight plus they actually enjoy themselves whilst performing. Easy for some eh? :-)

February  nights can be fairly quiet depending on the weather and if anyone’s still feeling flush since paying off Xmas however a good crowd turned out and many of them had their dancing shoes on…and used them exuberantly for the the usual couple of sets.

First Set

1. 20th Century Boy - T. Rex
2. Emerald - Thin Lizzy
3. Rosalie - This Lizzy
4. School’s Out - Alice Cooper
5. Ace Of Spades - Motorhead
6. Paper Plane - Status Quo
7. Waiting For An Alibi - Thin Lizzy
8. Just What I Needed - The Cars
9. Are You Gonna Go My Way - Lenny Kravitz
10. Lola - Kinks
11. Ice In The Sun - Status Quo
12. Pictures Of Matchstick Men - Status Quo

Second Set

1. Whatever You Want - Status Quo
2. Dancing In The Moonlight - Thin Lizzy
3. Don’t Believe A Word - Thin Lizzy
4. Gimme All You Lovin’ - ZZ Top
5. Milk And Alcohol - Dr Feelgood
6. Whiskey In The Jar - Thin Lizzy
7. The Jean Genie - David Bowie
8. Turning Japanese - The Vapors
9. Get It On - T. Rex
10. Coz I Luv You - Slade
11. Play That Funky Music - Wild Cherry - 1976 for those who wanted to know!
12. My Sharona - The Knack
13. Spirit In The Sky - Norman Greenbaum

Encores

1. Delilah - Tom Jones however the Sensational Alex Harvery Band version
2. I’m A Believer - Neil Diamond / The Monkees

I hadn’t realised just how many Thin Lizzy songs they covered, six in all plus four Status Quo! That’s got to be some kind of record at The Kings surely?

I’m guessing that Black Rose will be back later in the year and looking at the calendar that will most probably mean October/November time. See you then guys.

The Wha? With Some Great First-Timers

February 19th, 2012 editor 4 comments

I like new bands and especially those that set out to be completely different rather than play the “expected” classics from whichever genre. Scunthorpe evidently has a wealth of musical talent judging by the bands from that area who frequent The Kings and The Wha? were no less than advertised.

It was yet another cold, fairly quiet, Saturday night in mid-February until the band struck up, yep, initially they were loud however after a few minutes seemingly completely normal and congratulations to them on nailing their sound on their first visit with it travelling all the way down the bar and crystal clear. Even Balding Bloke was impressed on a night off.

You’ll find the two set lists below however I have one question, this is the third band in three weeks performing Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition”. Is something happening I’ve not been told of? Good version though:-)

First Set

1. It Takes Time - Otis Rush
2. Goin’ Down - Freddie King
3. Stop Messin’ Around - Fleetwood Mac
4. Red House - Jimi Hendrix
5. Messin’ With The Kid - Rory Gallagher
6. Too Tired - Gary Moore / Albert Collins
7. Got A Broken Heart - Walter Trout Band
8. Walkin’ By Myself - Gary Moore
9. Oh Well - Fleetwood Mac

Second Set

1. Cold Black Night - Gary Moore / Fleetwood Mac
2. Tore Down - Freddie King
3. Dust My Broom - Robert Johnson / Elmore James
4. All Your Love - John Mayall
5. Looking Back - John Mayall
6. The Hunter - Free
7. A New Day Yesterday - Jethro Tull
8. What’s Goin’ On - Taste (Rory Gallagher)
9. Superstition - Stevie Wonder
10. La Grange - ZZ Top

Now that where their set list ends however I am also sure we had:

11. Crossroads - Robert Johnson / Cream

Encores

1. I have absolutely no idea what either of these were, apart from excellent!
2.

Interestingly as the night progressed The Wha? were pulling in passers-by many of whom stayed and thoroughly enjoyed possibly their first taste of real music! All fabulous stuff, now all we need is some Solomon Burke, Bo Diddley, George Thorogood, John Lee Hooker, Lil Ed & The Blues Imperials and if anyone’s up for the challenge of J. B. Hutto’s “Lulubelle’s Here”, you’ll never get me out of The Kings:

You Tube - Lulubelle’s Here

Let’s get the diaries out guys, you’re going to be a very busy band.

Mr Stiff Back In Town

February 13th, 2012 editor 2 comments

We haven’t see Mr Stiff since last June therefore I was looking forward to seeing them again and I wasn’t disappointed, however saying that they were a bit too heavy for some who soon disappeared. That just left a bit more bar space for those of us who can handle this type of music, well, that was until the word got around the town and it filled up again!

These guys are seriously talented instrumentally and the vocals, especially AC/DC, were exceptional, close one’s eyes and it could have been Bon Scott or Brian Johnson on the stage…I’m told they also do an AC/DC tribute act, now that would be interesting.

First Set

1. In The Flesh - Pink Floyd
2. Riff Raff - AC/DC
3. Back In Black - AC/DC
4. Lil’ Devil - The Cult
5. Dakota - Stereophonics
6. Smooth Criminal - Michael Jackson
7. Streets - I mssed this, was it U2’s Streets Have No Name?
8. Too Much Too Young - The Specials
9. Pour Some Sugar On Me - Def Leppard
10. Time Is Running Out - Muse
11. Starlight - Muse
12. Mountains - Biffy Clyro
13. Bartender And The Thief - Stereophonics
14. Run - I missed this, was it Snow Patrol?

Second Set

1. Eat The Rich - Aerosmith
2. Uprising - Muse
3. Can I Play With Madness - Iron Maiden
4. Hands All Over - Maroon 5
5. Superstition - Stevie Wonder
6. Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
7. Sex On Fire - Kings Of Leon
8. All These Things That I’ve Done - The Killers
9. Mr Brightside - The Killers
10. It Wont Suck Itself - Steel Panther
11. Hell Aint A Bad Place - AC/DC
12. Shot Down In Flames - AC/DC
13. You Shook Me - AC/DC
14. Highway To Hell - AC/DC

Encores

1. Time Warp - The Rocky Horror Show - Richard O’Brien/Patricia Quinn/Nell Campbell/Charles Gray
2. Whole Lotta Rosie - AC/DC

If you know the answer to tracks 7 & 14 in the first set, please let us know through the comment box.

Surely we won’t have to wait another eight months to see them again?

Dan Cobley - The Singing Woodman

February 13th, 2012 editor No comments

Friday night saw a couple of solo singer/guitarists, sorry, I have no idea who one of them were, however Dan did two sets.

To be honest I couldn’t really hear what was being sung or going on since it seemed more like a private party at the stage end however those who were there to watch obviously seemed to enjoy it and every now and then aplause broke out.

Needless to say I have no set lists and can’t write much more.

Snowed-In With Point Blank

February 5th, 2012 editor 2 comments

It’s almost a year since Point Blank were last here and they brought with them the coldest snap of the year plus a good covering of snow and a new bass player. The usual format of a couple of sets with the first set of ten covers which I completely missed and finished, I was told by several people, with the best Neil Young’s “Rocking In The Free World” that they had ever heard…high praise indeed. Also there was a track called “Gravity” and I have absolutely no idea which version they played, if you know please post here.

The second set included a great track and was superbly played, from their 1969 album Willy and the Poor Boys, Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son”, excellent stuff, insofar as I am concerned they could play this all night long! Hopefully we’ll see this band back again later in the year.

First Set

1. Teenage Kicks - The Undertones
2. Cigarettes & Alcohol - Oasis
3. Time Of Your Life - Greenday
4. She’s So Lovely - Scouting For Girls
5. 20th Century Boy - T. Rex
6. What A Life - Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
7. You Really Got Me - The Kinks
8. Gravity - Embrace
9. Laid - James
10. Rocking In The Free World - Neil Young

Second Set

1. Molly’s Chambers - Kings Of Leon
2. Rock N Roll - Led Zeppelin
3. Higher & Higher - Jackie Wilson
4. Sweet Child O’ Mine - Guns N’ Roses
5. Valerie - Amy Winehouse
6. Rocks Off - The Rolling Stones
7. Mr Brightside - The Killers
8. Highway To Hell - AC/DC
9. Times Like These - Foo Fighters
10. Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival
11. Nutbush City Limits - Tina Turner
12. Sex On Fire - Kings Of Leon
13. Dakota - Stereophonics
