Once More Into Another Catch Up Post!
So…what’s happened the last couple of weekends that you may not know about? Four bands, no set lists, me with no pad and pen, me late as usual, me missing some bands, me busy…ok, enough about me with no reference details!
Friday September 23rd, we had the superb Legendary Night Owls with their classic blues and with the recent addition of Dave Tomlinson/Formula on keyboards the band is, for me, most probably the best band of its genre in the East Midlands, great stuff from all the guys.
Stunz and Harpman will be playing Friday 14th October.
On Saturday 25th we had a return visit from The Modernaires and even though they played through Balding Bloke’s system they really did not give him much opportunity to engineer their sound with the drummer controlling most of the evening. The result? Ok the crowd enjoyed them however I felt they were way over-engineered and actually spoilt their potential of a good sound therefore for several of us it was a disappointing preformance…below par would be an accurate description.
A late call on Saturday afternoon from The So and So’s asking to play on the Sunday evening was a bit of a surprise. In the end two bands turned up and they spent an extraordinary amount of time setting-up only to be interrupted by a fire alarm going off caused by someone wandering around upstairs with a lit cigarette! Both bands played current Indie-type of stuff and both acquitted themselves reasonably well except they were far too LOUD! Ridiculously LOUD…shall I repeat that and hope they take note? TOO LOUD!
Friday 30th September and the first full line-up for new band The Warbirds from Lincoln. Most of these guys are well-known on the local music playing and writing scene therefore it was of interest to see and hear how their new Indie-style band were. Overall fine, for me it was about an hour’s set of two halves, with the second half being much more enjoyable with some great lyrics and an altogether more upbeat/dare I say rockier sound? I’d like to see them again once they’ve got some more songs in their warchest, ok repertoire, and see in which direction they’re heading. Of course thanks to Balding Bloke for making them sound spot-on.
It’s been five months since we last saw Starvin’ Sid and his band on Saturday 1st October…but was it the SS band we know? Nope, nothing like…after many years drummer Ollie has decided to move onto new ventures and has been replaced by Chip however it doesn’t finish there. Bass guitar and double-bass player Jazz decided to throw himself and motorbike at the tarmac thus rendering both of them unrideable:-)
Therefore at late notice both Micky and Jack Broadbent stepped-in to help out and we suddenly had 3/4 of the making of a new Starvin’ Sid band who all played tremendously with all the usual SS classic rock and blues songs to a very busy and appreciative bar. I’m not too sure when they’ll be back however the preliminary 2012 calendar will be posted soon.
As an aside note to Jazz since he also plays in the League Of Mentlemen and ostensibly at the Kings on 22nd October, there will either be a change to the band line-up or a band change..keep an eye on that one.
Quick update regarding The League of Mentlemen:
I have just been speaking to Jazz & he informs me that he is fit & well to play on 22nd October.

Martyn.
