Quality Heavy Rock From League Of Mentlemen

October 23rd, 2011 editor No comments

Obviously if heavy rock is not your “thing” then you wouldn’t have enjoyed it however the very busy bar showed just how many do. Quite simply this was two sets of the best heavy rock ever played at The Kings. Everyone played their part equally, quality vocals, superb guitars and drums plus a glorious sound served up by Balding Bloke. Also they made my life so much easier with a set list including the original artists names therefore you’ll get the lot!

Set one commenced with “Word Up” from Gun, “Slither” by Velvet Revolver, Audioslave’s “Show Me How To Live”, a superb “Enter Sandman” from Metallica, Green Day’s “Basket Case”, the not very commonly played “Prime Mover” from Zodiac Mindwarp, Terrorvision’s “Pretend Best Friend”, “I Wanna Go Where The People Go” from Wildhearts, “Ghost” from Slash, Audioslave’s “Cochise”, “All My Life” from Foo Fighters and ending the first set “Hysteria” from Muse.

How do you follow the first set? Try “Just A Woman” from Nickelback, then into Queens Of The Stoneage’s “”No One Knows”, “Remedy” from Seether, and then into a tremendous Rage Against The Machine “Wake Up/Killin’ In The Name” which had the busy bar cheering and applauding for quite some time. Next came “She Hates Me” from Puddle Of Mud, the band’s own “Burntout”, “Harder To Breathe” from Maroon 5, another Foo Fighters with “The Pretender”, an interesting “Whiskey In The Jar” from Thin Lizzy/Metallica, it worked…then time to swap over guitars for Jazz to do Status Quo’s “Caroline” and returning to normal we had “Darkness” from The Darkness and wrapping up the night was a medley of “Roadhouse, Paranoid, A Jiggy Bit, Whole Lotta Rosie, Roadhouse” and just for extra good measure a cracking “Gay Bar” from Electric Six.

There you have it, 25 superbly performed songs by a really nice bunch of guys who thoroughly enjoyed themselves. A special mention must go to Jazz who broke his arm a couple of weeks ago and played the entire two sets with it strapped up in pins! I bet that aches today. Diaries were out at the end of the night for their next appearance which will obviously be next year.

Cappuccino Trio Turn Into A Quintet

October 23rd, 2011 editor 4 comments

It’s been ahwile since we last saw Cappuccino and not only did they turn up with Chris on guitar and John with drums they also came with two completely new sets of classic cover songs into which they had evidently put a lot of work and effort.

Apparently there was a set list however I understood they strayed from that very early on therefore I can’t give you a run down of what they actually played but I do remember their final number was a great Chuck Berry medley starting with “Roll Over Beethoven” into “Johnny B. Goode” and finishing with “Go Johnny”. Question…Why does no one ever do “Bye Bye Johnny”?

The band seemed to really enjoy themselves and certainly the Kings’ customers did since I don’t think I’ve seen so many people/couples all dancing all the way down the bar at the same time for ages. Compliments as always for their excellent sound which was engineered by Balding Bloke. I have no doubt Cappuccino will be back again, what do you reckon, Xmas time?

Lacklustre Klout

October 16th, 2011 editor 6 comments

Oh dear, what can I write? Quite simply a few years ago Klout’s sound engineering was non-existent, along came Balding Bloke and he made them into a band who were a pleasure to listen to and watch and were very popular. On Saturday night they refused BB’s offer to do their sound and they ended up back where they were a few years ago!

For those who thought they sounded good you MUST have been in the mosh pit since once one went past the first pillar, about a third of the way down the bar from the stage, the sound was very muffled, the drums were fairly good HOWEVER where the heck was everything else? Occasionaly the bass guitar could be heard and that was it apart from Kev’s vocals which sounded a bit strained at times.

Let’s have no excuses Klout, this was a very poor sound performance, we all know you can sound much, much better than this, don’t let yourself down again.

Stunz & Harpman Classic Blues Duo

October 16th, 2011 editor No comments

Friday night and three blues sets from Mick Stones on various guitars and Kenny Mayle’s vocals and harmonica covering some 30+ classic and not so well-known songs, included in the first were “Welcome To Bluesville”, “King Bee”, “She don’t Want Me No More”, “She Won’t Leave Me Alone” and “That’s Life”.

The second set commenced with “Living With The Blues”, “Can’t Be Satisfied”, “Shame, Shame, Shame”, “So Much Trouble”, an absolutely fabulous Bob Dylan “Tangled Up In Blue”, You’re The One” and “Caldonia”. After another short break the third set started with “Big Boss Man”, “I Found My Baby”, Ramblin On my Mind”, “You Need Me”, Tell Me Baby” and they completed their night with an extended version of Muddy Waters’ “I Got My Mojo Workin”.

All great tracks and hugely appreciated by everyone present. I’m not too sure when they’ll be back again but at a guess sometime over the Xmas period would be good:-)

Crossfire Still On Form

October 16th, 2011 editor No comments

Saturday October 8th saw the return of the ever-popular Grimsby band Crossfire. They’re one of the few bands that actually nail their sound engineering every time and this time was no exception. The only issue I have with Crossfire is that I would like to hear some new stuff from them, what they do they perform extremely well, I just want more…say about another half dozen tracks or so mixed in with their current covers. Go on guys, you know you can do it!
