A Full House With The What

September 18th, 2011 editor No comments

I can’t write a post about The What’s performance since I couldn’t get in to see them however I’m very confident it was well up to their usual high standard!

Why couldn’t I get in? The physical limitations of The Kings makes it impossible to actually get into the building when it is this busy and allied to the fact that some people simply hog sections of the bar, trying to get a beer is ridiculous.

This isn’t a criticism of Sharon and her excellent girls, it’s a fact that the building, at the moment, is not well-suited to such a popular band and it’s a serious point to bear in mind should The Kings ever decide to feature a national act and need to ticket the night. A quart into a pint pot simply does not fit and it usually ends up with less money being spent than more.

The What are not scheduled for another appearance until Saturday December 24th,  Xmas Eve. I can’t believe I just wrote Xmas in mid-September!!!

Second Nature In Cruise Mode

September 11th, 2011 editor No comments

It always surprises me when a Kings’ regular says they haven’t seen one of the more frequent bands especially considering Second Nature feature at least two to three times a year and with their three sets of classic tracks, many of them only covered at The Kings by Second Nature, I knew this style of music would be appreciated by him and duly was.

I don’t know if it was me but they sounded louder than usual with a little too much bass and I know for certain I could not have stood at the front where one guy was with his head stuck in a speaker!

Deep Purple, Gary Moore, Rainbow, Who, Bon Jovi, Bad Company and many others all feature in their extensive repertoire and as always they finished with their excellent Pink Floyd “Comfortably Numb” which is always a huge crowd pleaser. We’re just starting to put together the 2012 calendar therefore check the What’s On link at the top of the home page to see when your favourite band(s) are returning.

WHAT A 5th Anniversary Barbecue!

September 9th, 2011 editor No comments

Come rain or shine nothing was going to stop the many regulars who turned up for five years of uninterrupted live music weekends at The Kings and be entertained by no less than our own local band, The What, with, I think, maybe 4 sets over 3 hours as they, too, munched their way through a pile of burgers etc.

There’s no need to tell regulars what they perform, we all know that at some point there will be Beatles, Who, Northen Soul, Oasis and a bit of classic funk, soul and Motown but what a very pleasant surprise when ex-band songstress Ellie appeared for a few tracks…it’s a pity she forgot to bring her saxophone.

As with all good bets on the English weather the rain stopped towards the end of an extremely enjoyable Sunday afternoon and early evening. Many thanks to Sharon and Richard for organising this and the past five years of mostly top-notch live music…can we handle another five years, you bet we can.

Superb Steve Fulsham Band

September 9th, 2011 editor No comments

It’s been nearly 5 months since The Steve Fulsham Band debuted at The Kings with two sets of sensational rock n blues, how would they be this time?

Quite simply, superb…I can listen to this genre of music and quality all day and all night long and even though the town was strangely quiet when they first started, by the time they got into their stride with their own songs and covers of classic songs that no one ever does, everyone who came into The Kings stayed until the very end instantly realising they were experiencing a very class act.

An excellent night, one of my favourite ever, and unfortunately it’s doubtful we’ll see them again until mid-March 2012!

August Bank Holiday Weekend Round-Up

September 3rd, 2011 editor No comments

Friday night and who did we have…The Hitman and Her? Nope, none other than Balding Bloke playing 80s/90s hits with, seemingly, a lot of dance tracks that I was never, ever, into. Fortunately the volume level was such that it was almost possible to ignore them but, hey ho, some people like them.

Rough Trade had  a big welcome return on the Saturday night and as always kept the crowd thoroughly entertained with two generous sets of classic rock…and I missed their speciality Hocus Pocus but they did give us a new finish with a Blues Brothers medley. Rough Trade are due back on Friday December 23rd.

All the classic rock followers were out in number on Sunday night for the return of Scunthorpe band Joker and they were not to be disappointed with an outstanding two sets superbly engineered by Balding Bloke. How many of you actually knew that Joker’s guitarist had left the band and his replacement had a mere four days to learn the set list? Fantastic effort guys and “Lil Devil” was excellent, we look forward to seeing you again New Year’s Eve.
