This weekend saw a re-visit from Isle of Wight band Black Hawk. I may as well point you straight to my post from 2010 since nothing has changed!
A good selection of songs, seemingly well-played but awful sound engineering, well, let’s be honest, NO sound engineering. The dancers may have enjoyed them but there were a lot of people who left with bleeding ears. Honestly, if they’re booked again I won’t be there.
This will be pretty brief since I missed 99% of it after the Legendary Night Owls fabulous opening night.
I caught the tail-end of Lincoln band Soul Solution who were up to their usual high standard of quality soul and Motown covers. A hot Sunday afternoon’s hog roast under the new Kings Pyramid with Trip To The Roses apparently went down extremely well with a complete sell-out of all the food.
Wednesday’s acoustic open night and jam session, which I completely forgot about, had several regulars up having some fun and for Friday night’s session with Michael Nicolls and friends I only caught a trombonist with backing tracks who seemed to be doing a mixture of Herb Alpert, Yello’s 1988 “The Race” and Santana.
Saturday rounded the week off with Grimsby band Circa, who haven’t been here for two years, with their covers of 60s Mod to New Wave Punk, Indie to SKA plus their own material. That’s as much as I can write since I know no more!
What a fantastic two sets from Ken Mayle on vocals and harmonica, Howard Goy on drums, Andy Dalton on bass and Jon Newby on guitar. Classic rock and blues tracks at their very, very best such as Jimmy Reed’s “Ain’t That Loving You, Baby”, Eric Clapton’s “Reconsider Baby”, Big Joe Williams’s “Baby Please Don’t Go”, “9 Below Zero” from Sonny Boy Williamson, “Spoonful” first recorded by Howlin’ Wolf, “Times Are Getting Tough”, “Confessing The Blues” and “So Many Roads” from Otis Rush.
Little Walter’s “Just Your Fool”, “Too Late, Brother”, “Worry You off My Mind”, “Evil”, “Someday, Baby”, “You Don’t Love Me”, “You’re So Fine”, “One Way Out”, Jimmy Rogers’s “Chicago Bound”, “Riding On The L & N” and finally a superb encore with “I Got My Mojo Working” from Muddy Waters. More, more, more…
