Classic Starvin’ Sid Rock ‘N’ Blues

April 24th, 2011 editor No comments

Warm weather brough plenty of people out to see the Starvin’ Sid trio complete with new drummer Chip…ah well, they are from Grimsby:-) Needless to say Chip is a very good drummer and equipped himself well into the distinctive style of this extremely versatile band.

All the usual stuff was there, and I reckon some news ones as well, with some of their own songs and classics from Cream, Robert Johnson, Big Joe Williams, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and even a little bit of Sid Style country rock thrown in for good measure. The second set had Jazz with his thumping double bass put to good effect and, was it me, or did Jazz sing a lot more than he usually does?

Yet again a superb and thoroughly enjoyable night’s entertainment the only problem is these guys won’t be back until after the summer on Saturday October 1st! Hmmm…make note to self, start a rock ‘n’ blues club upstairs twice a month on a Friday night…anyone interested?

Please let Balding Bloke know if you are, thanks.

Rock ‘N’ Blues Masterclass From The Steve Fulsham Band

April 17th, 2011 editor 1 comment

Without a doubt The Kings is getting some very talented bands these days and if one’s into rock ‘n’ blues they really do not come much better than this tremendous trio based out of Hull. Covers are not their style although they do include a few in their two sets of 19 tracks but most are their own written songs and it’s very easy to understand just why this band is in such high demand.

The first set commenced with “Not Too Late”, “LittleAngel/Swimming”, “Highway 69″, “Hard Drinking Woman” and “Jesus”, “Shuflin Feet” did just that followed with “Never Met A Girl Like You”, “Loser”, Say Bye Bye” and into the short break with “You Don’t Love Me”. There you have it, 10 songs, 60 minutes, lots of tremendous guitar rifts and a very hard working drummer.

Needless to say the second set of 9 songs, and about 75 minutes, carried on from where they left off with “Karma Sutra”, “Going To L.A.”, “Mine This Time”, “Tell The Truth”, a cover of the late Gary Moore’s “If You Be My Baby”, “Stevie Ray Vaughn’s Leave My Little Girl Alone”, an excellent cover of ZZ Top’s “Fool For Your Stockings”, “Mouth Shut Mama and “Still Hanging On” and that was it…or was it…were the crowd going to let them go that easily?

Needless to say, absolutely not,  and off they romped into probably the best Led Zeppelin medley at The Kings in ages for about 20 minutes including “Rock ‘N’ Roll”, “Ramble On”, “Living Loving Maid” and “Bring It On Home”…I think! What a fantastic debut from three very nice guys who thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it just so happens, for those of you who missed them, that they’ll be back on Saturday, September 3rd…can I wait almost 5 months?

A Welcome Return By The Carnival

April 7th, 2011 editor No comments

It’s almost 10 months since we last saw these guys therefore The Kings regulars were well up for a great night’s entertainment. As usual The Carnival don’t play to a set list but go for how the crowd react which included a medley going from Jimi Hendrix going through to Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World”, The Small Faces’ “All Or Nothing”, some ZZ Top and quite a surprise from such a band, “Sex On Fire” from Kings of Leon.

Their three sets seemed to simply fly by and before we knew it they commenced their last song originally recorded by Jamaican reggae group The Melodians however popularised by Boney M in 1978, “Rivers of Babylon”…seriously, I’m not joking and what a great fun finish. Keep an eye on the What’s On calendar for their return date.

Friday Night’s A Breeze For Storm

April 7th, 2011 editor No comments

Sutton On Sea rock ‘n’ blues band Storm breezed through two sets of quality classic tracks to a busy and expectant bar with quite a few first-timers including Canned Heat’s “Let’s Work Together”, the Allman Brothers Band “Statesboro Blues”, The Doobie Brothers “Long Train Running” and probably Dire Straits’ “Money For Nothing” and “Sultans Of Swing” plus Jimi Hendrix’s “Red House”.

Further cracking tracks were Fleetwood Mac’s “Black Magic Woman”, The Rolling Stones “Brown Sugar”, “Honky Tonk Woman” and “Jumping Jack Flash”, Bad Company’s “Can’t Get Enough” and The Kinks “You Really Got Me”. Naturally we had “Johhny B. Goode” and “A Whole Lotta Rosie” and it was great to hear “(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66″ and “Great Balls Of Fire”. I’m not too sure whether The Beatles “Saw Her Standing There” has been done before likewise Free’s “The Hunter” but it’s quite some time since we had both “Down At The Doctors” and “She Does It Right” from Dr. Feelgood.

Before we knew it the night was drawing to a close but not before a superb Pink Floyd “Comfortably Numb” which had the entire bar applauding the band when they finished. Needless to say they will be back and most probably on a Saturday night.
