Their reputation for quality music and entertainment of course! The band was a bit under pressure since their bass player was at a wedding and the lead singer, Jodie, suffering from an awful sore throat which he tried to kill at the interval with copious amounts of alcohol!
Fortuately Keri from Klout stepped-up to help her pals out and helped with backing on “Honky Tonk Woman”, filled in at the end of “Boys Of Summer” and did both “Teenage Kicks” and surprised all of us with a superb “Enter Sandman” from Metallica.
So what does that leave us with? Another 28 tracks over two sets, all superbly sound-engineered by Mike. I missed the first set completely but am told “Start Me Up” and “Lil Devil” were well-worth a listen. My favourites from the second set were “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love”, “Play That Funky Music”, “Walk This Way”…by the way by Aerosmith guys in 1975!!!…”Pretty Vacant” and “Anarchy In The UK” were just magical and as for “Gay Bar”, what an awesome choice and the main encore for the night was AC/DC’s 1977 “Let There Be Rock”.
Unless you travel a bit further afield you’re going to have to wait until Saturday September 25th to see these great fun guys again.
Ok, apologies for the belated posts however I’ve been otherwise pre-occupied.
Gin House are one of my favourite bands, I’ve known them for years, in fact a darned sight longer than I would care to admit, yet they were always going to be competing with the weather on this night, easily the hottest day of the year with loadsa people out enjoying themselves and basically being too burnt and scuppered to get out for the gig!
Of course the faithful were there and we had Phil and the guys treat us to their usual excellent selection of great rock, roll and blues tunes…lead singer Phil even managed to get down on the dance floor with some of his own sweet moves. Only one question for the band really, why don’t you use that harmonica a bit more, I love it:-)
Gin House won’t be back until Saturday November 27th so no sunburn excuses next time, frostbite allowed!
These guys are very, very good musicians and singers plus allied to a superb sound system, engineered by Richard’s better half (?) I believe, it was inevitable that we’d all have a great night of them playing covers from…guess who?
Two sets, the first obviously included many of the well-known tracks however it is the second set I am now looking more forward to since, after their last performance here, I guessed that they would try and spring a little surprise on us again and they duly did with a medley of Beatles, Kinks and AC/DC covers. As crazy as it may seem the regulars actually seemed to prefer these more…t’was probably a break they needed!
Needless to say GZ performed brilliantly, Robert Plant and the boys would have been very impressed and for me the stand-out tracks were a couple of real rock-bluesy numbers with Richard on the harmonica that I can’t remember the name of…help…Graf Zeppelin should be back on Saturday October 16th.
For the past four years all LTD fans had come to know what to expect from them…one of the best rock covers’ bands in the U.K. faithfully reproducing classic songs of the last 50 years, however time moves on and with it these talented five young men from Norfolk are driving their music style in another direction.
Some do not like this new direction, others obviously do, the nearest I can liken their sound can be found on Scuzz TV which specialises in more hardcore and metalcore genres. Personally I loved it, some of their regular covers were virtually unrecognisable at first and the re-working of their own “”Dirty Rock N Roll” was quite superb and so too was “Slither” from Velvet Revolver and most probably indicates more of what we may expect to hear from LTD.
This is quite a controversial sound to play to a normal Saturday night crowd who like their well-known sing-along stuff, after all it is the landloard’s endeavour to stay in business, therefore I guess that if some of us want to see them again then we’ll end up having to pay to see them on their National Tour starting soon…don’t expect too many old style rockers there, it’s probably a bit too noisy for them!
A couple of classic rock cover sets from Scunthorpe area band Joker debuted The Kings on Easter Saturday night and had the place rockin’ and a rollin’ for far longer than they ever expected.
The first set was slightly marred by the bass amp being too loud but once this was sorted out what an entertaining band we had. First song up was “Talk Dirty to Me” the second single from Poison, now that’s a first I reckon, Judas Priest’s “Breaking The Law”, Robert Palmer’s “Bad Case Of Loving You” and Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid” followed in quick succession. “Teenage Kicks” always gets a great reception and Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell” was excellent, so far so good.
The second set commenced with “Whiskey In The Jar”, some “Smoke On The Water”, “All Day And All Of The Night” from The Kinks and then the superb Steppenwolf “Born To Be Wild”. A very nice medly with “20th Century Boy” and a real crowd sing-along from The Proclaimers “500 Miles” and “Wishing Well”…it may seem a bit unusual but it worked. Of course we had to have some AC/DC…what???…”Hell Ain’t A Bad Place To Be”!!! Naturally as day follows night Led Zep’s “Rock ‘n’ Roll” had Sharon beaming from ear to ear and then it happened…the new national anthem, “Sex On Fire”.
Joker had a full audience participation by now standing on whatever they could find and they were lovin’ it but now had to find some encores…Johnny B. Goode was first up but the crowd still wouldn’t let them go so they started their first set again and for me The Cult’s “Lil’ Devil” was superb. A great debut night and we look forward to seeing them again, as usual keep your eye on the calendar.
