Well one thing’s for certain…you like these guys! I honestly don’t believe I’ve ever seen The Kings so full and it wasn’t just for a short period, it was the entire night including a follow-on 21/2 hours of Balding Bloke playing many of your classic favourites.
So what did we get this time from The Jam’d that we didn’t last time that made them different? Quite simply they asked Balding Bloke to try and give them that early raw, hard-edged sound that The Jam were well-known for and guess what…I reckon he succeeded. No studio finesse here softening the blows, it was punk rock for all to enjoy. Of course not all their music was like this and The Jam’d covered many of the more popular songs such as a “Town Called Malice”, “The Eton Rifles” and arguably their most famous song “That’s Entertainment”.
At the moment The Jam’d are not slated for another appearance soon however after last Saturday’s performance and the crowd’s enjoyment I have no doubt they will be returning.
I can’t believe that it’s nearly 4 months since Mosquito’s debut at The Kings, would they be as impressive second time round?
Quite simply, yes! Even though lead singer Emma was evidently suffering from the dreaded sore throat bug going around the band rattled off 39 songs over their two sets and it was only towards the end of the second set that her throat was obviously giving her a lot of grief…mind you, by this point we’d had an enormous selection of songs such as “Vertigo”, “American Idiot”, “Zombie”, I Kissed A Girl”, “Wuthering Heights” and “Bartender And The Thief”, and they were just from the first set.
During the second set “Seven Nation Army”, “Teenage Dirtbag”, “Daddy Cool”, “Buck Rogers”, once again they did Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach”, a surprising Foundations’ “Build Me Up Buttercup”, a great Girls Aloud “Love Machine” and they completed the night with “Walking On Sunshine”.
Slightly, ever-so slightly, on the down-side, the bass was not travelling ALL the way down the bar, from halfway up it sounded fantastic with no problems whatsoever however Emma’s singing more than made up for that:-) We’re all looking forward to seeing them again on Saturday July 17th…that’s 5 months away, hot summer nights and buzzing mozzies!
Yet another new rock covers band for the Kings and you’ve only yourself to blame if you missed their superb debut with a near flawless performance of 27 tracks over two sets which was perfectly sound engineered by Ed…he knows that rock music needs bass and bass we got in bucketfuls.
So what did we get? A really good mixture of classic rock songs commencing with T. Rex’s “20th Century Boy” followed by Steppenwolf’s “Born To Be Wild”, The Kinks “You Really Got Me” and the Small Faces “All Or Nothing” was followed by a first-time ever Zodiac Mindwarp “Prime Mover”! I’m not 100% sure but has “Ziggy Stardust” ever been done here before? If not then it has now.
What a surprise at the start of the second set as well, U2’s “Vertigo”, I’m not sure if that wasn’t a first too. “Are You Ready To Rock”, “Purple Haze” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again” were rattled off much to the delight of the regulars and when one of the best-known songs at The Kings started it was obvious with whom they were all comparing it…”Radar Love” from Golden Earring. Excellent guys, spot on. Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life” was quite superb, Whitesnake’s “Fool For Your Lovin’”, Deep Purple’s “Smoke On The Water”, Van Halen’s “Jump” and Led Zeppelin’s “Rock ‘n’ Roll” led us to their final song of the night and, it seems to me, the finale for many bands at The Kings these days, AC/DC’s “Whole Lotta Rosie”.
A fabulous night of classic rock covers, in fact one the very best performances at The Kings many of us has seen, and naturally Sharon had no hesitation in re-booking them…I’m not sure for when therefore you’ll need to check the What’s On Calendar when I’ve found out.
