Classic Vanilla Smooth Is Thursday’s Delight

One thing is for certain about this week’s music festival at The Kings…a completely different genre of music has been offered every night and Thursday was no different with the vastly experienced, and not often seen playing live in Louth, classic jazz and blues covers band Vanilla Smooth.

‘Don’t like jazz’ is a comment we often hear… but when we say, do you like songs by Amy Winehouse, Van Morrisson, Sinatra, showtunes, TV and film themes… music you can do a ‘proper’ dance to, latin etc… people revise their opinion. Whatever, I don’t really care what people think, I enjoy making music with a bunch of talented friends… that, to me, is what being in a band is all about. A young friend asked me recently what I was playing lately… when I answered, Jazz, he shook his head and said, ‘No money in that, then?’ True… but challenge, satisfaction, friendship and enjoyment aplenty.

Well they do say the difference between a rock guitarist and a jazz guitarist is that one plays 3 chords in front of thousands of people and the other….
Really dont like being put in any particular category it just opens the door for ill-informed musical prejudice based on the fear of being perceived as “uncool” - we just find material we like and give it the treatment - if it works we keep it in. Emperors new clothes we aint - and as for those who scorn covers bands theres covers and theres interpretations - the latter of which I think we attempt to pull off. As Chris says we are getting too long in the tooth to care what people think - we trya and give value for money, see people enjoying themselves at our gigs, enjoy ourselves and get good feedback afterwards and re-bookings.
Rarely seen live ? Depends what you get invited to…
Good job with the sound John - by the way. Must be great to work with such a fabulous voice…
